Kimberly Seals Allers is an award-winning journalist, author, maternal and infant health strategist and founder of Irth, a new Yelp-like app to address racism and bias in maternity care. For nearly a decade, Kimberly has created and directed innovative community-partnered projects in New Orleans, Birmingham, Detroit and Philadelphia, among other cities, working to improve birth, breastfeeding, and maternal health outcomes by centering the lived experience of care. She speaks internationally on racial disparities in birth and breastfeeding and on the findings from her community engagement work that was supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Her presentation will address some root causes of deep racial disparities in maternal deaths, demonstrate ways racism and bias shows up in practice, and highlight effective practice improvements and community-centered solutions for addressing the Black maternal mortality crisis.
